Animal of the week!
This week’s animal is this cutie right here. Don’t even go there with me; snakes are freaking adorable critters. This is the Ball Python. There’s one at my local PetSmart that captured my heart (I WILL take him home one day!) so I figured I just had to feature them. This snake is nonvenomous, and is native to Africa; they’re popular as pets because they’re very docile. While some can reach as much as 5 to 6 feet long, typically adults stay under 4 feet. They eat mostly small mammals (mice, shrews, other rodents) but sometimes young ball pythons will eat birds. Males tend to be considered mature around 1.7 pounds, while females are considered mature at 3.3 pounds. Whether that’s as heavy as they get or not, I don’t know. If you plan to keep one as a pet, they need a 40-50 gallon tank, at least two hiding places, and one should have a heating pad ranging from 80 to 90 degrees fahrenheit so the python can regulate its temperature properly.
